These are our chin mansions from Quality Cage Company. I designed these cages myself and had them custom built. Apparently Quality Cage thought they were a very good idea because they now build several different models to sell on their web site. :) I highly recommend their cages... they are chew-proof, escape-proof, and they are collapsible for easy moving. Trust me, they are worth every penny. (I've bought five in three different sizes so far!)

The cages above are the original 48" tall model with the Polytray. After owning these cages for a few months, I wrote to QC and suggested they make a slide out tray instead. They took my suggestion and now have a newer improved model with the powdercoated steel slide out tray.

I also told QC they really needed to sell the 48" tall model with five shelves instead of four (including a double wide "middle floor" shelf), but they did not take my suggestion on that. They do, however, offer replacement shelves you can purchase on the web site separately, or it's really easy to make your own shelves. Two replacement shelves (besides the four that come with the cage) will make a middle floor. If you purchase a 48" tall cage, please buy or make a middle floor - it is MUCH safer for the chinchillas. My furballs were trying to leap across the cage from side to side and were missing the shelves way too often. Falling from top to bottom can be very dangerous for the chins as they can break limbs or cause internal damage.

I also highly recommend the rolling stand. Not only is it easier to move them to clean up the area around their cage, it lifts them off the floor a bit so they are away from drafts, dust and dirt. My chins sleep and play in the top of the cage, but the wheel is at the bottom and they often go down there to pee too. It makes me feel so much better knowing they are not right at floor level.

Attaching the Wheel to the Cage

The pictures below show how I attached our Leo Braun wheels to the cages. When we first got the wheels we discovered the combined weight of chinnie and wheel made quite a racket banging the sides of the cage. Try sleeping in a small apartment with that going on! My solution cost less than $20 and was very easy to do by myself...

Pic 1
I bought a 1" x 12" pine board and had it cut at Home Depot to the width of the back of the cage.

Pic 2
I drilled holes in the ends of the board and installed hanger bolts using a cap nut and a crescent wrench (see How to Make Your Own Shelves below for a picture of a cap nut).

Pic 3
I then marked on the flat side of the board the three holes in the T back brace of the Leo Braun wheel, and a space where the nut that actually holds the wheel to the brace is. I drilled holes with a drill bit for the three bolts to hold the wheel to the board, then used a 1" hole saw to drill out the space to allow the brace to sit flush against the board.

Pic 4
You can see from the wheel side how the brace sits flush against the board.

Pic 5
I used regular nuts and bolts to attach the wheel brace to the board (sorry the pic is so blurry). I would've liked the bolt to stick out the back (outside) of the cage instead of on the inside, but I didn't measure where to put the holes carefully enough, so the two bolts on the sides of the T had to go from outside to inside, and the top bolt actually goes the other way and sticks out the back like I wanted.

Pic 6
I put the hanger bolts sticking out of each end of the board through the wire sides, leaving about 1/2 inch of space between the board and the back of the cage. Then I secured the board to the cage with a washer and wing nut.

Pic 7
Edwyn posing in the wheel after it was installed. He's our fastest chinnie, but Hopi swears she's going to be faster as soon as Santa brings HER wheel. :)
