Hiking in Gay City State Park
Hartford, Connecticut
July 21, 2002

My friend Marie (from Texas) frequently visits the Northeast on business. She was recently in Connecticut helping a new store open, so I drove up to see her and we got some hiking in. (Yes, it is really named "Gay City State Park." I have no clue why. There wasn't a homosexual in sight.) These trails were much easier than the hiking we did when we got lost in Harriman State Park, but that was good since we only had a couple hours before dark anyway. We still managed to cover 3 miles... and this time we had a map! :)

It was a bit humid in the woods and buggy (as Marie will attest to after having something fly up her nose), but the canopy of trees was beautiful overhead. We found old walls lining the trail and several "man-eating bridges" with boards missing going across practically stagnant water. We also came across a fantastic real bridge... just the kind of thing you'd imagine Robin Hood hanging out on. I loved the ferns that carpeted the forest floor too. Quite a beautiful place to visit. :)
