| Lately I've had the urge to go exploring so I've been seeking out hiking trails in NJ. This particular one leads directly under the GWB, along the NJ side of the Hudson River. It was a pretty steep climb down, but once you're at the bottom it's an easy walk along a mostly paved path. We could've taken a regular road to the same destination, but a local jogger pointed out the head of the trail for us and it looked much more rewarding.
About the time we got just underneath the towering edifice that links NJ and Manhattan, some Army men in full camo with big guns appeared and nicely informed me I wasn't allowed to take pictures of the bridge. I suppose they're worried about terrorists. We did get some shots once they were out of sight, but nothing as close as I would've liked.
Nevertheless, there were some surprising and interesting things under the bridge including a small waterfall that was unfortunately littered with garbage. (I didn't want to attempt a pic of that in case that was off limits as well.) It was a very grey day, making the City across the water look dirtier and uglier than usual, but the stone archways and looming cliffs made me feel as if we'd stepped into something from a medieval movie set. If it weren't for the constant noise of the cars above, you could easily imagine horseback riders coming from behind at any moment. I'm beginning to see why everyone says NYC is so amazing, but it's still not my favorite place.
